Sagar-Runi murder: Court extends (evwo‡q‡Q) probe deadline (Z`‡šÍi †kl ZvwiL) for 114th time

 

A Dhaka court today extended till (ch©šÍ)  November 18 the deadline (†kl ZvwiL)  for submitting (†ck Kivi Rb¨)  the probe report (Z`šÍ cÖwZ‡e`b)  of a case filed (bw_fz³ Kiv n‡qwQi)  over murders of journalist couple (mvsevw`K `¤úwZ)  Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi in February 2012.This is the 114th extension (evov‡bv)  of the deadline (†kl ZvwiL)  for probe report submission (†ck).Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mahbubul Haque passed the order (Av‡`k ‡`b)  as   Investigation Officer Khondoker Md Shafiqul Alam, also an additional superintendent of police at Rab, failed (e¨v_© nb)  to submit (Rgv w`‡Z)  the report today.

On September 9, the same court asked (wb‡`©k †`q)  Rab to submit (Rgv w`‡Z)  the investigation (Z`šÍ cÖwZ‡e`b)  report by today.

The High Court on September 30 expressed concern (D‡ØM cÖKvg K‡i)  over Rab's prolonged failure (`xN© e¨_©Zvi)  to complete (m¤ú~Y© Ki‡Z)  the investigation.

"The prolonged (`xN©)  investigation delay (wej¤^)  is both unfortunate and shocking (†e`bv`vqK," said the bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Muhammad Mahbub Ul Islam.

In response to a petition (Av‡e`‡b mvov w`‡q), the High Court directed (wb‡`©k †`q)  the home ministry to transfer (n¯ÍvšÍi Ki‡Z)  the case to a high-powered task force (D”P ch©v‡qi Kvh©wbe©vnx `j)  comprising personnel from various agencies, with the aim (jÿ¨ wb‡q)  of completing the investigation and submitting a report within six months.

The next hearing (ïbvwb)  is set (wba©viY Kiv n‡q‡Q)  for April 6, 2025.

The couple, Sagar Sarowar, news editor at Maasranga TV, and Meherun Runi, senior reporter at ATN Bangla, were killed in their rented flat (fvov Kiv)  in Dhaka's West Rajabazar on February 11, 2012. Their 5-year-old son was at home during the incident. Runi's brother, Nousher Ali Roman, filed a case the following day.
